|The appropriate care of classroom pets, including native animals||2|
All reptiles kept as pets in NSW or by schools for educational purposes must be obtained from a licensed reptile breeder and the licence for the animal must be transferred to the new owner. It is illegal to capture and keep wild reptiles in NSW as they are all protected species.
There are many species of reptile that are available for acquisition from licensed suppliers but schools are encouraged to obtain those species that are most suited to life in the classroom. These species include:
- Blue tongue lizards
- Bearded dragons
- Long necked turtles
- Small pythons.
Comprehensive information about these species can be found at Keeping reptiles in schools.
